The 1985 James R. Thompson Center, a former government building, is an atypical glass building in the middle of Chicago with a monumental atrium resembling the hull of a spaceship. The red-and-blue postmodern palace has until now served the city as an indoor public space. But the building, designed by German-American architect Helmut Jahn, has faced possible demolition for the past few years. With the new owner, the tech giant Google, comes the hope of salvage, but also construction interventions on valuable elements and the loss of public access.
