Creating comfort in the not so spacious Ukrainian housing estates, temporary balconies used to be a complete rarity. Interviews with balcony owners, Council employees, historians, sociologists and also urbanists, developers and architects investigate this phenomenon of small architectural form. Its historical development creates a telling parallel with the history of post-Soviet Ukraine – its life, culture and relations between personal and public space.
