What goes on behind the doors of a former foundry in the heart of Amsterdam? In the complex called Tetterode, a large community of artists have found refuge, who have lived and worked here for over 40 years! After the building was occupied in the 1980s, the residents converted the space into residential studios on their own accord and, according to the rules they set together, still work in harmony with each other. Tetterode is a prime example of the city’s support of artists’ studios, which allowed the artists to continue using the building as they had been by buying it from a private owner. The melancholic image of an ageing community that can only be saved, but also destroyed, by young blood is analogous to the situation of the building itself. Will Tetterode remain an oasis of creativity despite the increasing pressure for commercial exploitation of this lucrative site?
