One of the most famous realizations of Soviet brutalism, Kiev’s Flying Saucer is undergoing a period of radical transformation of its immediate surroundings and perhaps even of itself. Florian Yuriev’s works are exceptional in their form, their work with space, and interdisciplinarity. In addition to architecture, he is intensively involved in music and visual arts, which are also interwoven into his buildings. Now in his advanced age, he is fighting with the help of young architects to preserve the original form and qualities of this building against the megalomaniacal project of an influential investor. The ongoing construction work on the neighboring shopping center is creepingly materializing the imminent threat of the redevelopment of the Flying Saucer and the fatal gap between consumption and culture.
