Symphonie Diagonale (Diagonal Symphony) is one of the earliest works in abstract film to have been conserved and it is the only one by this artist that has survived to our day. Viking Eggeling has been experimenting with moving image some years earlier together with Hans Richter, who is considered a pioneer in this type of cinema. Eggeling refused to use music as it was the case at that period. In his view, the transformation of shapes and lines are supposed to become its equivalent. The variation of one geometric motif explores mutual compositional relations.
