This Oscar-nominated feature film documents the society in modern China, where the contrasts between the upper and lower classes are completely at odds with the communist preaching of social equality. The film’s slow gradation of narrative shows China’s population from the poorest to the richest, recalling the civilizational evolution from the American cult film Koyaanisqatsi. The visual epic of a city and its inhabitants sensitively poses critical questions on the world’s most populous country, giving the viewer chance to make their own judgments.
