What’s it like to live in Alterlaa, the largest social housing complex in Austria? The humorous film debut of Bianca Gleissinger reveals the operation of this “city within a city”. In the 1970s, architect Harry Glück came up with a utopian premise that allowed people from the working and middle classes to live like the rich. Each house is equipped with a swimming pool, has a number of common areas; there are kindergartens, schools, shops, and sports facilities within the complex. The director returns to the place where she grew up and uses the film to reflect on her experiences. The film shows a peculiar collection of characters for whom life in Alterlaa is everything, but at the same time it dares to look closely at the darker side of this utopia.
